Stream of Time

July, 1745
Bhai Taru Singh who would rather have his scalp removed than cut his hair.

October,2006
A barber proudly displays the kesh of a young Sikh boy in Punjab, who is trying to catch up with times.
From a recent story published in Outlook. http://outlookindia.com
According to Outlook, about 80 per cent of the Sikh youth in rural Punjab have cut their hair and discarded their headgear.
Nothing more to say.

Well that shows how low some people will go to get acceptance in society instead of sticking up for their faith.

Hi,

I had the opportunity to read about your frustrations and I agree that blogs like this are necessary for both sikh men (and sikh women).

I know that you'll agree you're not the only single sikh out there. It seems like you have had bad experiences with sikh women, and I don't blame you for saying you don't feel like marrying one anymore. I agree its not easy to find the person you want to marry, but ...who gives up after a year???
Especially someone as busy as yourself....speaking of which

You mention that the career you chose occupies 90-100 hours/week of your time. When during that week do you think you have time to talk to someone, or "fall in love" with someone? I just think its silly for you to beat yourself up for having a turban. Does having a turban really have anything to do with it? Or did you choose a profession that really doesn't allow you to 'date'? I don't know if I make sense, but its something to think about.

Look at the bright side. In 10 years when you're an attending, maybe you can only work 60 hour weeks. Then you'll be 40, and you can have your first kid. Every sikh guy is supposed to be a doctor, but what are sikh girls supposed to do in the meantime? Wait around till they're done with their 20 years of school? Do 20 something sikh girls really want to marry 35 year old guys? If the dad works all the time, does that mean your wife will stay home and take care of your kids? For all its worth..I hope things work out between you and "C" and I mean it.
I wonder when Sikhs will realize money is transient. And if money isn't the reason...If you've made the decision to pursue Medicine then I guess you should accept the fact that you are dedicating your entire life to helping people... not to raising a close knit family or finding the perfect wife. Please don't be offended by anything I said. Just a trend I've noticed, especially within the Sikh MD population.

Hello,

I feel like your identity comes from within, not your externals. As long as you know in your heart that you are a Sikh, what does it matter if you obey the externalities? I am not a Sikh, so I wouldnt know as you would but I would think (as a fellow Indian) that what you want to follow should come from within you and not from what your parents or others tell you to think/feel. Only then you'll have that passion about it all.

ya well identity comes from within, but if someone says that he or she is a sikh then they have to follow atleast the basic tenets of the religion, so if you give up on those that does not make you a bad or an immoral person but it does not make you a sikh either. my take

i personally feel that religion should'nt be imposed on anyone, but these young kids cut their hair just to look good & get accepted by their own social circle.if this trend continues the coming generations might not know who guru gobind singh was.there has to be some order that has to be brought about in the sikh society otherwise sikhs will be an extinct species soon.
all the practicing sikhs should be proud of themselves for carrying on the tradition of their families & the gurus.and as far as the issue of girls is concerned i think raw confidence is all you need to sweep a woman off her feet.i m an indian sikh & in my frind circle it is often said that surds take away all the pretty girls.so paaji dont worry u ll find ur mate soon just dont loose ur confidence and self esteem

Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj was the greatest warrior the world has ever known. Just because a few wayward kids cut their hair doesn't mean that the True Warrior will be forgotten. Not only will coming generations know, but the whole world will know who the Immortal True Warrior was. For every one so-called Sikh who cuts his hair, there are five more that join the Panth.

May I remind you, you don't have to be born into a Sikh family to be a Sikh.

your faith comes from within and not externally- most of the pple who are cutting their hair are im sorry to say not the most educated of pple and therefore do it to fit in...fact is there are some pple who look like sikhs and are not sikhs and some who dont look like sikhs and have more sikhi in them than anyone else.

the sikh who would rather have his head cut off did so to make a statement, there was something to fight for and something to die for, because punjabis are so mixed up in living their day to day life (milking thier cows so to speak) they forget sikhi- and its easy to do- maybe we need to remember that we have something to fight for and indeed die for depends how you see it the main historical and intelectual hub of sikhdom is no longer in existence- my reference is to maharaja ranijit singhs court in lahore-(not exhaustive- there are others) not to mention the birthplace of our founding father Guru Nanak is surrounded by the Kafirs of this world (sakat)....until we dont re-establish a sikh voice and an educated one this will continue to happen.

A lot of Sikh boys have receeding hairlines because of how tightly they tie their hair up ... almost all of my male friends do and so does my teenage brother.

Bless you Harry,
Perseverence pays. If you are committed to your faith, practicing the principles of compassion, kindness, you will be a treasure for a young wise woman to find and enjoy. You need not settle for less, she's out there. When you are both ready you will find each other, but as they say, you can't win the lottery if you don't buy a ticket! As with your medical studies, the pursuit of marriage must be wisely and carefully considered and you must have a plan. You must make your self available and take time to make contact, spiritually connect, and develop friendships, or realize what your priorities are at this time and that is fine. Cultivate the very virtues that you seek in your future bride: kindness, humility, good humor, gentleness, ability to listen, good personal hygiene, love of life, love of God, positiveness, ....
It took me years to find the wonderfull man that I am married too, and I have no regrets for the amount of time it took.

Ok Mr "Harry" what is up with harry are you harvinder? harjeet? or Harjot or harbans...what? where is identity when it comes to walking with time on giving the so called westernized twist to your name huh?

and as far as identity is concerned it is not in turban...guru nanak dev to Guru Teg Bahadur were all our gurus as well not just Guru Gobind. And there was a need at that time to rachofy the "singhs" to fight the injustice, to do that gorila war he needed seperate identiy ti distinguish his men from aurang's men being in ancient times all dressing alike all wearing turbans and majority sporting beards and such. That was a time confidence and identity needed to be infused in Sikhs to make them Singhs. Are we fighting the same war today? No we are fighting different war which requires the identity of a Sikh that is infused in all the teaching collectively of 10 gurus.
There is nothing wrong with being turbanded and nothing wrong with being not so. The reason to keep a turban just to prove a point and be that stubborn "singh" {without understanding that Sikh just means a student, student of good pious living among many others} is equally heinous as to cut your kesh for wrong reasons like peer pressure and girls.
Recognize the true enemy here which is not men who cut their kesh or girls who reject you for your turban.
And on same note recognise ones who do the above are perhaps as limited in thier intellect as you are for being prejudiced and holding this against them.
On a bit of cheerful note, one who accepts you for who you are, not because you stuck to age old identity of Kesh but because of the true Sikh you are is worthy of letting your heart bleed for, no one else.
And trust me day you are open, the door will open too for that special girl who might hate your turban because you tie it wrong but loves you for you have a mind that ties everything else right.
:)
